PERSONALITY:

What are the three pillars of being the Commander?

Wisdom. Compassion. Strength.

These are the things any nightblood novitiate will tell you when asked and they are traits Lexa both values and possesses.

Trained since she was a mere toddler, Lexa was raised to be a leader for her people who were ever in a perpetual fight for their lives. Originally from Trikru (known in English as the Woods Clan) she was Anya's second, a warriors apprentice and from her youth she was taught that sometimes the things you had to do weren't the things you wanted to do. Blood must have blood. Justice must be served, and above all else that she must protect her people no matter the cost. Loyalty was far more important than her own life, for the lack of it could cost them all.

When her nightblood was discovered her training moved from under Anya to Titus and the Commander at the time. She trained with her fellow novitiates and from the beginning people saw her as different. She was clever, of course, it was hard to survive in their world without being at least a little clever but more than many, Lexa saw the bigger picture.

After her ascension this became more apparent than ever. She did not chase Luna, a novitiate who ran away rather than fight the last battle against Lexa herself, despite law and good sense saying she should. She didn't strike back out of rage or grief when the Ice Nation, Azgeda, killed her lover Costia in a horrific manner and delivered her head back to her.

Instead she set about taking the more difficult path. The clans had only known lifetimes of war and loss, Lexa believed together they could unite and be stronger and build a foundation for a truly better world. She founded the coalition of the twelve clans, including Azgeda despite their prior sins and dedicated herself to that cause.

To many she might seem cold - long was her motto that love is weakness, especially after Costia, but the truth is that no matter the years and the troubles of her life Lexa's heart remained. She felt every blow, for every person she sent to their deaths. It was just she had accepted that she had to do the horrific things to maintain their sort-of peace, and to have any hope for a better future without it all devolving to war once more.

She could use her aloofness to her advantage. Not just to appear mighty and detatched before those who knew her, but when dressed down to trick travelers and strangers from the sky, get information from them as a lowly peasant girl because no one ever expected her unless they knew a lot of her already. Such a tiny girl dressed in rags could never be The Commander. Slyness was almost as valuable a trait as her ruthlessness that she exhibited in spite of her own feelings.

That coldness only began to crack when she met Clarke, a girl who unlike the rest of her people may have feared her power but wasn't afraid of her. Someone who would challenge her, make her reconsider things that had become par for the course in the day to day life of ruling a damaged people in a ruined world. Clarke never missed an opportunity to advocate for a different way of doing things, a kinder way which Lexa longed for but could never see her people accepting more than they had long before people fell from the sky.

But each argument wedged it's way in, each discussion showed Lexa how alike they were, yet how different. Slowly this changed her approach to things, being willing to try for peace over war even in ways that had always proved impossible.

Yet this aching, this love that was slowly leaking out of her heart and revitalizers her to be less of a statue and more of a person, none of it stopped her making a deal to damn Clarkes people and save her own. Even if it broke her own heart and potentially killed the girl she was beginning to realise she loved and wanted to make a life with.

Lexa's people came first. Always.

Even so, her people secured, Lexa wanted nothing more than to save Clarke once she saved her people and promptly left them. Common wisdom had it that The Commander should kill Wanheda (Clarke, the Commander of Death for killing the mountain) and absorb her power. Lexa only wanted Clarke returned to her safely, both for selfish reasons of her own care for Clarke and to save her from Azgeda and Lexa's other enemies  that only really played at being nice.

Her love for Clarke was not diminished by time or her own actions, and she still respected her wishes, giving her as much space as she could while planning a way to rectify her previous disloyalty and make Skaikru and Clarke her people as well, so she would never have to go against them or betray Clarke again.

Peace was ever the goal but love drove her, in the same way it was always the quiet force making her do anything for her people, even things she accepted only because it was the way of her people and they would not have it any other way. In the days before her death she had begun to find a peace she never thought she would know. She agreed, not just in her heart but in law that Blood Must Not Have Blood, she was ready to push for a better world where life really could be about more than surviving.

Then in her dying breaths she still tried to comfort Clarke, her calm still present as she bargined for Titus to never try to hurt Clarke again, and to tell Clarke that she would be okay.

She died wanting more for her people, to protect them, to keep them all - including Clarke and her people - safe. And she died knowing she found love, that it was possible, even after all of this.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Lexa doesn't possess any powers as such, aside from being a very skilled warrior, however, she is ...augmented, I suppose you might say by an AI known to her as a sacred object, "the flame" and to others as ALIE 2.0. Implanted at the nape of her neck over her brainstem it does not control her but rather provides her means to access the wisdom and council of its prior hosts, the Commanders who came before her. It also collects her own memories, ethics, traits, personality, etc. Somewhat like a back-up, but not to be used to restore her own life but help grant others wisdom, later.

She also has black blood which makes her resistant to radiation and able to accept the flame without it killing her. This is a genetic thing that she's had her whole life, vs the flame which she got on her ascension day.

Our people act as if war is easier than peace. If that's so, should we not try and achieve the more difficult goal?
