[When Yule rolled around, a two and a half foot long wooden box was delivered to Lexa by the most impatient pixie ever. Inside the box Lexa found a pair of kukri and their leather belt sheathe. Etched into the blade of each long knife was the symbol of the Flame. Also tucked into the box was a bottle of excellent Lionett Vineyards wine, a couple toys for Kova, a blue dress and an envelope. Within, Lexa would find two different coupons and a note.]
Happy Yule, Lexa. Thanks for staying and putting up with me and my shit. Love, Beau
[Voice at like 2am because what is a normal sleeping pattern???]
[She went forth and back on whom to ask this for a while, and then realized that she'd spoken to someone who mentioned Peony before. And if they know Peony surely they know how to deal with drun Peony.]
What do you do with a drunk person?
[And to list the things she's tried:] Dumping her in cold water didn't help.
[This is Ren's very best handwriting. It still looks like a spider took a bath in ink and rolled all over the page.]
youve not ben in your room or at shop
ar you ok?
ren
[She debates putting a kiss on the end. Is that too formal??? So she settles for a crude drawing of a star instead. Yeah. That'll work. Bitches love stars.]
[Truthfully, Lexa wasn't sure Ren would miss her so soon - and writing her preemptively to tell her of her absence seemed both foolish and presumptive that she would even care.
So she hadn't.
When she writes back, Lexa's script is something that would look unrefined next to Glinda's, but was still a neat, looping, perhaps softer handwriting than most would expect of her.]
My apologies, Ren. I am well. I have been a few days in the forest, taking in the fresh air away from the town.
I do not think I will be away too much longer. I will be glad to see you when I return.
Because Corbin's word in her ear eats at her. She hadn't fulfilled a promise. She'd said she would tell who it was that they were special. And she wasn't sure that Lexa was that kind of special. But she knew that their shouted argument was bothering her more than it should do.
If only because Lexa never seemed to be fucking frightened of her and that kind of pissed her off in a weird way. This fucking iteration of do better/be better constantly rang in her ears. And it ground on her nerves.
In the end, she lays in wait for Lexa to leave her room - taking care to stay well out of sight and paying off the pixie she'd bribed to notify her - and leaves a rather messily put together collection of items outside her door and a note.]
lexa
i did not want to upset you. i am sorry i upset you.
i think you are very nice. special.
good special. not bad special.
i got you this cake.
i underst get if ur still mad. but i want to explain with gooder words if you will let me.
[This is not exactly what Lexa had expected when it came to whether or not Ren would come to her senses.
She examines the package and it's... intriguing cake inside and takes it into her room to read the note more thoroughly, setting the cake on her table.
There was a bad kind of special???
Lexa got the gist of it even if she thought with a little concern that her education in a post-apocalyptic world had somehow proven better than whatever schooling Ren had received and likely ignored. Oh well.
Sometime later, she texts Ren:]
Are there better words for the discussion we had by the pool?
Regardless of any harm to me, it seems you are quite... disquieted by the concept of anyone knowing about us.
[Except Lexa had told Rowan and doesn't feel terribly bad about it. Oops.]
I got a pub. We're having a lock in. Wanted to invite you. No pressure if you don't fancy it. Just din't want to not invite you and make y'think you weren't welcome.
And, uh, if it was okay I wanted to have a talk with you. Not at the lock in or right now. I figured you could pick a place 'nd time that suited you, don't matter where, if you'd be willin' to give us a bit of your time.
[On Christmas morning, Lexa'll find a relatively neatly wrapped gift outside her door. Inside she'll find a framed pencil sketch of herself. It's almost a candid shot; Rowan's drawn her on her bed in her castle room with Kova. There's also a small but sharp sheathed knife, simple but well made.
There's also a note:
Dear Lexa, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I'm glad I got to meet you this year. Congratulations on your new house! I hope you don't get too lonely out here, but if you ever want company you can always give me a call. Looking forward to spending more time with you in the new year!
[On what Ren estimates to be Christmas Eve, a gift is dropped off at Posies and Presents to a very smug Peony who delights in presenting it to Lexa when she comes in that day. With a gleeful; "From an admirer!"
The gift itself is a bronze torc necklace with an accompanying note. If Lexa looks closely enough she'll see indents inb the page where it has been written out a few times.]
[On the morning of New Year's Day, a basket containing six fresh sugared raised yeast donuts was delivered to Lexa's front door with a tag tied to the basket.]
The gift is left for her outside her room in an unassuming gift bag. The tag says her name but doesn't say who it's from. Inside is a Baking for Beginners cookbook and a couple of cat-shaped cookie cutters. Nothing else.
[BEcause Ren went home for a while and she's making her rounds now the revelry of Spring Equinox is over and she's come out of her brief drunken haze.]
[What has brought this on? Goodness only knows. It's a full moon and Ren is bored and it's one of the nights she decided to stay at the castle and give Lexa some space after the near full week she had holed up there while the tent was in town. Her handwriting is neat for her and she's clearly given some thought to this.]
